Proposed Budget Example

Breakdown of allowable budget categories and maximum funding amounts for a SURF project, including student stipend, travel, supplies, housing, and total project cost.
Category Budget
A. Stipend (up to $2,700 for students ONLY per project).(1) If two or more students, they will split the $2,700 stipend evenly. $2,700
B. Travel for students during the project for reasons related strictly to the project (no more than $500 will be allocated per SURF project).(2) $500
C. Supplies(3) $1,400
D. Ten weeks of housing in Cardinal Village per SURF project. Two students who are PIs on the same SURF project can evenly share the 10-weeks (i.e. one PI gets the first five weeks, and the other PI gets the second five weeks of summer). $1,400
TOTAL PROJECT COST $6,000

All purchases will be made as allowed by the university policies and state/federal regulations.

Example of Budget Justification:

(1) The stipend will support part-time & effort for the student. A student who is a sole PI will receive $1,350 in June and $1,350 in August/September, upon submission of a final report. When more PIs, they will split each stipend evenly.

(2) The student will travel to the National Conference of Undergraduate Research. The student should provide details about the event, and the trip should be related to his/her SURF project. If more than $500 is needed, the SURF travel budget will cover partially the student travel expenses.

(3) Supplies: 25 analytical kits for total dissolved nitrogen, labware for experiment, including 5 250-ml beakers, and 100 pipette tips.
