The Texas Academy. The Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities (Texas Academy) was created by the Legislature of the State of Texas (H.B. 1940) in 1993 to offer intellectually advanced, gifted high school-aged students in Texas the opportunity to pursue the ideals of academic excellence, ethical leadership and community service within the context of a university setting. All students admitted to our unique program receive full-tuition scholarships for 15 credit hours per semester from the state of Texas through the Texas Education Agency. Texas Academy operates as an independent, special legislative school district under the auspices of the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System. In its capacity as a special legislative school district, the academy has been authorized to confer its own diploma at graduation. Many Texas Academy students continue their undergraduate studies at Â鶹ӳ»­Ó°Òô after graduating from the academy, while others attend institutions that specialize in a particular field of study.

The Texas Academy program is rigorous, open to all intended majors, and includes at least one endorsement recognized by the TEA and includes academic tracks as part of the elective curriculum. Texas Academy graduates meet and often exceed the recommended graduation requirements of the state of Texas. Texas Academy graduates qualify as first time in college (FTIC) applicants and should be viewed as eligible for all FTIC scholarships and awards.

Program of Study. The Texas Academy follows the Texas Education Agency Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) for incoming juniors. Students complete the required foundation curriculum, four credits of English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science, and three credits of Social Studies. Students also complete enrichment curriculum credits in Fine Arts, Health Education, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Physical Education, Technology Applications, and Career and Technical Education courses, per the Texas Education Agency (TEA) graduation requirements. 

Rank and Grade Point Average (GPA). The Texas Academy does not rank students. All students who meet the DAP requirements are eligible to be considered for and compete for Top 10% automatic admissions at almost any Texas public university.

The Texas Academy provides both an unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale and a weighted GPA on a 5.0 scale. All previous high school credit eligible and graded coursework are included in the calculations. College credits earned or transferred to Â鶹ӳ»­Ó°Òô are applied to the students’ graduation needs, but the GPA is not transferable or included in the overall GPA calculations.

Classification of Students. Texas Academy students are full-time college students enrolled at Â鶹ӳ»­Ó°Òô. Texas Academy students are classified as college freshmen or sophomores by Â鶹ӳ»­Ó°Òô if:

• Freshman has met all entrance requirements, but fewer than 30 semester hours have been earned.
• Sophomore has earned a minimum of 30 semester hours.
