Featuring over 40 works in oil on canvas, watercolor, and charcoal, the exhibition highlights Mazzu’s body of work featuring specific points of interest along the upper Texas Gulf Coast. Focusing on the Chenier Plain, the 6.5-million-acre wetland stretching from Galveston, Texas to Vermilion Bay, Louisiana, Mazzu’s landscapes depict the lush flora and dramatic meteorological conditions that characterize Southeast Texas.
Mazzu’s artistic investigations have recently evolved from an urban influence to focus on the natural world. Inspired by “the coastal marshes, inland waterways, timeless beaches, and coastal prairies…” writes Mazzu, “I have been fascinated by the sense of deep space, brilliant light, distant horizons and endless skies found in this part of Southeast Texas.”
“We are pleased to present these beautiful landscapes which are true-to-life depictions of the natural wonders that are characteristic of our area,” notes Alexandra Irvine, director of the Dishman Art Museum. “We are especially delighted to have the opportunity to highlight the work of one of our Lamar alumni.”
Working since 1994, Ken Mazzu is a Beaumont native who currently lives and works in Houston. He received a BFA in Studio Art from Lamar in 1992, and MFA in Painting from the University of Houston in 1997. His work can be found in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Galveston Bay Foundation; and the Dishman Art Museum, among others.
