Qin Qian, Ph.D.
Professor

Dr. Qin Qian is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Â鶹ӳ»Ó°Òô, specializing in water resources engineering. She received the James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award from Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society (Southwest District), in 2012. She was named an Anita Riddle Fellow for Research Excellence by the College of Engineering at Â鶹ӳ»Ó°Òô (2017–2020), received the First-Place Award for Faculty Sponsor at Â鶹ӳ»Ó°Òô’s Undergraduate Research Expo in 2016, and held a Presidential Faculty Fellowship for research from Â鶹ӳ»Ó°Òô (08/2014–05/2015). In 2019, she received the Outstanding Service Award from the Overseas Chinese Environmental Engineers and Scientists Association (OCEESA), for which she also served as President (2018), Vice President (2017), and Director (2015–2017).
Dr. Qian’s research aims to advance process-based knowledge that supports better-informed land use planning, ecological restoration design, and preservation of aquatic ecosystems. She is PI or co-PI on 40 funded projects totaling more than $10.6 million, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Gulf Research Program, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Texas General Land Office (GLO), Sabine-Neches River Waterway Navigation District, Lower Neches River Authority, and Center for Advances in Port Management, Center for Advances in Water and Air Quality, Center for Resiliency at Â鶹ӳ»Ó°Òô. She is author or co-author of more than 85 peer-reviewed publications — including book chapters, journal articles, and conference abstracts, presentations, and proceedings — and has served as lead or corresponding author on the majority of them. In addition, she has completed more than 30 research reports.
Dr. Qian has actively engaged in professional development and stays at the leading edge of her field through international, national, and state/regional involvement with leading professional associations, including AGU, ASCE, Chi Epsilon, CAWRA, and OCEESA. She has served as co-organizer and executive consultative committee member for the Mainland-Taiwan Environmental Protection Conference (MTEPC) in 2017 and 2019, and as Co-chair of the Geometric Design and Drainage Design Section for the World Transport Convention in Beijing, China, in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Dr. Qian teaches fluid mechanics, hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality modeling, and is an active proponent of engineering education through her research activities.
