Middle and high school students from across Southeast Texas got a hands-on introduction to college life this week at Â鶹ӳ»Ó°Òô’s (LU) free STEM camp, a five-day program designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Sponsored by LU’s Center for Resiliency, the camp combined coding, robotics, engineering, psychology, cybersecurity and team-building activities. Students explored everything from computer programming and math games to mental health awareness and digital citizenship.
“This camp is about giving students the chance to explore as many majors and areas as possible, so they can try things out and discover what sparks their interest,” Dr. Sujing Wang, camp director and associate professor of computer science said.
Students worked in small groups of two to five on coding and engineering projects, while larger groups tackled simulations and math challenges designed to strengthen critical thinking and teamwork.
“We integrate fun games and hands-on projects into the sessions, so students stay engaged and love what they’re learning,” Wang said.
In addition to classroom activities, participants toured campus facilities, visited university labs and took part in team-building exercises at the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center. For many, it was their first time on a college campus.
“Middle school students are at the perfect age. They’re open-minded and curious. They’re willing to try new things, and this is a great time for them to explore all the opportunities Lamar offers,” Wang said. “We want them to have that impression so when it comes time to apply for college, Lamar is on their mind.”
The camp also featured guest speakers from across the university, giving students insight into different academic programs and potential career paths.
“For many of these students, this camp helps them picture themselves in college,” Wang said. “They get to see what campus life is like, meet people from Lamar, and leave with the feeling that this is a place where they could belong.”
