The curriculum develops your writing, critical thinking and analytical skills while introducing you to American, British and world literature.
This program focuses on content knowledge, content proficiency, strategies, communication skills and analytical skills to help you become the most knowledgeable teacher possible with access to the most current educational trends, methodologies and technologies. Graduates will receive a Texas teacher certification and be prepared for a dynamic and rewarding career.
Creative Writing: A workshop approach to the writing of poetry, fiction and drama. May be taken for credit more than once when the genre focus varies.
Introduction to Teacher Education: An orientation to the organization and professional components of education in the United States with emphasis on Teacher Education in Texas.
Special Education Law: Students will develop an understanding of the legal requirements of special education law. This course will introduce students to seminal case law, including free appropriate public education, least restrictive environment, and assessment protocols for students with exceptionalities. Content also includes procedures pertinent to teachers providing special education services, such as federal and state regulations, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and the development of basic instructional programs.
Content Area Reading: This course is designed to provide the basic principles, concepts and procedures of reading and to enable prospective teachers to incorporate reading instructional techniques effectively into the content areas. Emphasis will be placed on the sound teaching practices within the confines of the content area classroom.
Children's and Young Adult Literature: A study designed to provide students with information about children's books, periodicals and related media and their use with children and young adults. Techniques and materials for motivating children and young adults to develop a continuing interest in reading.
Texas is currently experiencing teacher shortages in elementary and secondary, bilingual/ESL, career and technical education, computer science/technology applications, mathematics, science and elementary and secondary special education. Teachers in these fields will have a broad range of choices in where they teach. Texas ranked No. 38 in the nation for teacher salary in 2013, with the average in-state being $48,110, though the median salary for Texas teachers, according to the BLS, is higher. The determines minimum salary schedules for educators statewide; it dictates that first-year teachers must be paid at least $28,080, and teachers with 20 or more years of experience must be paid at least $45,510.
